Moving to Houston Can Be a Family Affair05/09/2018Moving to Houston is a big job, but you don't have to attempt it by yourself. Instead, you should turn moving to Houston into a family undertaking that inspires some quality time together and makes the whole job much more workable—and maybe even fun. Here are several pointers to get the entire family involved in the project. Write Down the Plan The day prior to packing, hold a family meeting and talk about the moving tasks that need to be done. Appoint tasks to everyone with clear directions about how to accomplish them. Your kids might enjoy checklists—there's something pretty rewarding about marking something "done", no matter if you are young or old! Young children may like helping you label the boxes, or even adorning them with stickers or crayons. Create a sense of teamwork, and when it is time to get started... Make It an Event Packing feels an awful lot like a burden. Rather than asking (or demanding!) the kids to do it whenever on their own, set aside a day or some blocks of time and have everyone packing at the same time. When you get started, prepare a special drink or snack and order some pizza. Encourage everyone to update each other on progress. Schedule break times for goodies, and decide that when the task is completed, you'll all do something fun as a family. That may mean going out to your favorite family restaurant, or doing something different in your new neighborhood! You could even hand out prizes for boxing the most in an allotted time frame or for getting rid of the most unwanted or outgrown items. Speaking of which: Sort Through Old Items There is no reason to move any things your children have gotten too big for. Keep the space and time by getting rid of them prior to your! Even younger children can decide if they have some items they do not play with anymore. You might elect to donate those unwanted belongings to children in need, which can be a rewarding accomplishment for your children, also. Get Garage Sale Ready If you are going to hold a moving sale, think about allowing your children keep the proceeds from from their items. This may inspire them to purge a few additional toys and clothes they don't need anymore, and it helps them to be more interested in the process. They might be more willing to help you work the moving sale, too! Let Them Pack Their Rooms Depending upon the age of your kids, you could let them manage packing their own rooms. Provide some quick instructions on how to pack clothes, awkwardly shaped items, pictures, and more. You or the moving company can handle the big or delicate things. Box Together Work together in the family room and other shared areas. Younger children can easily box books and other non-breakable items; tweens and teens can help you with items like dishes and small appliances. Use the time to have a conversation, or take turns choosing your favorite songs to share with each other. Ask the Pros Make your moving day more manageable yet by hiring some professional help!
