4 Mistakes Not to Make When Packing for Your Office Move to Houston06/18/2018by Julie DeLong, A-1 Freeman Moving Group Boxing up your office sounds like a straightforward task, right? Especially if you are fairly tidy, it appears like all you'd need to do is tuck your files in a box, your IT stuff in another, load up your office furniture, and you’re done. Sadly, getting your office from point A to point B is many times quite a bit more labor intensive than we tend to think it is. Luckily, sidestepping these simple mistakes when it's time to box up your office can save you a lot of anxiety when moving to Houston. Mistake #1: A Lack of Organization Whether you are moving yourself or have hired a moving company to take care of your move, the worst thing you can do when it's go time is begin without getting properly organized. You may believe you are organized because you scribbled a one word item designation on the side of the box, but what you need to do is think about what you are going to pack and in what order you're going to pack it. After that, you must distinctly label what is where. Because when you have your boxes loaded up, transported, and unloaded at the destination, you are not going to remember which box holds your power cords, and which one has your stapler in it. So, record a list on each box of what's in it to prevent digging, stress, and some hysteria while you get set up again. Mistake #2: Burying Things You Really Need If you've ever moved your house, you most likely be familiar with that feeling of finding the towels you haven't needed in 10 years amid unpacking, but not being able to uncover the shampoo and fresh clothes you require for tomorrow morning. An office move can contain a similar issue. That is the reason that you need to pack up the things you are not going to need urgently (such as your tax records from six years ago), and make sure they are placed on the truck first. The items you will need soon (your desk, your computer, your printer, etc.) should all be packed up last so they are the first items you take off the truck. This process helps minimize your work interruption, and assists you to get right back to work once you arrive at your destination. Mistake #3: Not Using a Timeline or a Checklist Moving an office to Houston is a task that usually happens incrementally, which is why it's crucial to have the right tools to track your progress. You should have a timeline mapped out to plan how long it will take to box up your stuff, the amount of time it will take to move it, how long it will take to unpack, and then the amount of time it will take to put everything back together. The timeline must have some space in it for problems, and it must be connected to a checklist so you can check off tasks as they're finished. If you plan to hire a professional moving company, they will aid you with this part. Flying by the seat of your pants isn't a very good option for an office move. Mistake #4: Bringing Stuff You Don't Need to Houston Moving your office is an occasion to start over, and to put your best foot forward. However, a lot of folks end up just taking everything with them, no matter if they actually need it. That's why, before you even think about packing, you need to go through all of your stuff in your office and think about if it needs to move to the new office location. That broken shredder that you already bought a new one and were keeping on hand in the event that you could get it repaired? Do not dirty up your new office with it. The pile of old, but still functional, cables you hung onto in case of an I.T. issue? Well, if they are several years old, they are probably outdated. That pack of musty paper that doesn't fit anyone's printer? Recycle it or hand it to an employee for their kids to scribble on. The more stuff you can get rid of (including digitizing old records so the physical copies are not needed) the easier your move will be.
